The helper surface: where the AI helper lives on a page

Two candidate containers for the per-surface AI helper, drawn on the same blocked edition-set page so the comparison is like for like; the pick is decision U-1.
PROPOSAL Decision U-1 2026-08-25
Annotation · the one thing already settled about placementThe helper is ANCHORED TO ITS SURFACE. A global bottom-right chat bubble was unanimously refused at the weigh-in and is not drawn here (spec 13.1, checklist 100): a floating bubble detaches the answer from the page it explains, floats over every surface including ones with no Help, and reads as a general chatbot, which this helper deliberately is not. Both options below keep the same per-surface control ("Ask about this page", sparkle icon) sitting inside the surface it explains; only what opens when it is pressed differs. Both drawings carry the same three starter prompts, the same free-question input and notice, and the same example answer, so the ONLY difference under comparison is the container.
Option A · Anchored expandable panel · PROPOSALPressing "Ask about this page" expands an inline panel directly below the control. The panel is part of the page: content below it is pushed down, nothing overlays. Drawn in the expanded state, at half scale.

CycleFY2026 GRI report draft
Reporting periodJul 2025 to Jun 2026
Intended publication date15 Feb 2027
No edition set can be built for a report published on 15 Feb 2027.
Reports published on or after 1 Jan 2027 must use newer editions of two standards in this edition set: GRI 302, energy, whose newer edition is numbered GRI 103, and GRI 305, emissions, whose newer edition is numbered GRI 102. Neither of those newer editions is published in the platform catalog yet, so there is nothing to build those two parts of the report from.
What you can do
  • Press Back to return to the step that holds the intended publication date, and set a date earlier than 1 Jan 2027 if that is when you will really publish.
  • Or press Save as draft and come back once the newer editions are published in the platform catalog.

The intended publication date decides which edition of each standard the report is built from. Every edition in the platform catalog carries a range of publication dates it applies to, and the date entered on this cycle is matched against those ranges.Source: Edition dating explainer v1

Pro: the answer stays beside the thing it explains, in the reading order of the page, and no overlay or scrim is needed; closing it returns the page exactly as it was. Con: a tall answer pushes the rest of the page down, and on dense surfaces the expanded panel competes with the content for room; the panel's width follows the surface, so the answer column can get very wide on large screens.
Option B · Slide-over drawer · PROPOSALThe same control, but pressing it opens a right-side drawer, roughly 420px wide, over the page. Page content stays where it is behind a scrim. Drawn in the open state, at half scale; the drawer contents are identical to Option A so only the container differs.

Annotationslide-over: the page keeps its layout behind the scrim; the drawer is the same home on every surface
Pro: the answer gets stable, dedicated room whatever its length, the page never reflows, and the drawer is a consistent home for the helper across every surface. Con: it separates the answer from the element it explains, covers part of the page while open (here the right side of the refusal table), and the scrim plus overlay make it feel more like leaving the page than asking about it.
Annotation · what both drawings share, byte for byteThe control ("Ask about this page", sparkle icon, drawn pressed), the three constrained starter prompts, the free-question input with its placeholder, the notice line under the input ("Questions you type are sent to an AI service. Answers are AI-generated."), and the example answer: two blocks, a source chip on each sourced claim, the AI-generated label visible from the top of the answer, and the standing footer reminder ("The helper explains. Decisions stay yours."). If the two drawings differ anywhere other than the container, the drawing is wrong. The starter prompts are per-surface authored content (spec 13.1, checklist 101); the three drawn here belong to the blocked edition-set surface and would differ on other anchors.

This strip is review scaffolding, not proposed UI. It lists the surfaces the guidance inventory ranked as anchors for the per-surface control (spec 13.1), so the U-1 pick is made knowing where the container has to work. The lock dialog anchor (rank 4) is a constrained host for Option A in particular: a panel expanding inside a dialog has very little room, while a drawer can open beside it.
Annotation · how this page is drawnOne base surface, drawn twice at half scale so both options fit one 1080p screen side by side, following the density set's pattern. The base is a faithful simplified recreation of the blocked edition-set page from the GRI Catalog Admin wireframes (state 1, publication date 15 Feb 2027); the simplifications are: the second refusal state, the activation checklist card, the no-exit explainer, and one recourse bullet are omitted, and the per-standard "Why" texts are shortened. The amber chips inside the drawings are review scaffolding at doubled type size so they stay readable at half scale; nothing amber ships. At half scale the panel copy is small: the drawings compare the CONTAINERS; read the exact panel copy in the shared-contents annotation above. The answer drawn is an example of a level A answer about page state; context rules are spec 8.2, not this page's decision.
